Medal winner a rare talent
Halls Creek midfielder Sam Petrevski-Seton could develop into a footballer unlike any other, according to WAFL talent manager Raff Guadagnino.
Petrevski-Seton, 16, yesterday was awarded the Kevin Sheehan Medal for best player of the AFL under-16 championships.
The Claremont colts player, described as an inside midfielder who can play forward, averaged 21 disposals and five clearances and kicked seven goals in his three games for WA.
It was the second championships in a row he was named player of his division after dominating for WA North-West as a bottom-aged player in the third division last year.
League sources were glowing in their assessment of the teenager yesterday, declaring him the early favourite to be the No.1 pick in the 2016 AFL draft.
Guadagnino said it was hard to compare Petrevski-Seton, listed at 182cm and 72kg, with other footballers when they were the same age but said those behind the State program were excited about watching him grow when he steps up to under-18 level.
"I think he's a diamond in the rough," Guadagnino said.
"He's an inside mid who can play up forward as well, a roving type. He covers a lot of ground, is a fierce tackler, great team player and he gets his players involved in the game.
"He's different. He has the make-up of a number of players I've seen over the years but he's his own player."
WA's only win from three games came against Vic Country on Tuesday but their two losses to Vic Metro and eventual champions South Australia were by a goal or less.
Jacob Sideris, Michael Humble and captain Sam Powell-Pepper joined Petrevski-Seton as the State's best.
WA North-West will compete for a second consecutive division three championship when they face the World XVIII at Metricon Stadium today.
