Gibbs returns to defend Manji 15000

MORE than 8000 spectators are expected to turn out for the Manjimup 15,000 Motocross Spectacular this weekend.

Reigning champion Kirk Gibbs will return to defend his title joined by Josh Hill from USA and Brad Groombridge from New Zealand.

Australian riders Luke Styke, Jay Marmont and local Dean Porter are a few other big names in the line-up of competitors.

Event organiser Willie Thomson said the talent for this year's event was "phenomenal".

"Josh has the speed and the goods, Brad is wild - he rides right on the edge, Dean's a local guy to really watch out for and Jay's won it more than anyone else in the history of the competition," he said.

"It really could go to anyone."

Thomson said the event was great for motocross fans and the broader community.

"A lot of people in the area ride bikes so it's the pinnacle of their sport," he said.

"It's also a decent cash injection for the Shire of Manjimup."

Organisers conservatively estimate the event would bring in excess of $1 million to the region through ticket sales, accommodation and retail purchases over the weekend.

June 5 will be reserved for practice, juniors will compete on June 6 and the main event will take place on June 7.

Gates will open at 8:30am on June 5 and 7:30am on June 6 and 7, with racing kicking off at about 9am.

Weekend passes are $30 for adults and $15 for children.
