Showjumpers set to test their mettle

Busselton Horse and Pony Club rider Mia McAlpine and her horse Woody are prepaing for the Horserail Busselton Winter Jumping Festival this weekend.

Some of WA's elite showjumpers will take to the arena this weekend in the 14th annual Busselton Show Jumping Classic.

A record number of riders have signed up for this year's event, with competitors expected to be tested by the Fred Freeman- designed course.

Busselton Horse and Pony Club vice-president Caroline Lill said competition would be tough over the two-day event.

"Two arenas will be run with heights starting at 45cm for our novice riders and young horses and the main arena will see talented rider and horse combinations tackling heights over 1.45m," she said.

"Busselton Show Jumping Classic is also part of the Pony Club Association of WA Tim Weigall Jumping Series that will determine the top junior pony club riders for 2015, and we have some young Busselton contenders in the mix.

"Local rider Tessa Lill will compete for the first time in the main arena on her gelding Twisty.

"Tod Brokeman will ride experienced pony Toledo and Mia McAlpine will ride her grey pony, Woody, and will lead the charge for Busselton in the pony club arena."

The public are encouraged to watch horses and riders in action at the event, which will start at 8am tomorrow.
