Pilbara race opens up

Racing returned to the Port Hedland Speedway earlier this month.

Port Hedland Speedway started off its season with the annual Pilbara Open held over the Easter long weekend.

Cars from all around the Pilbara competed, and the club fielded a strong selection of juniors, street stocks, productions and sprint cars as well as the crowd favourite burnouts.

In the productions, Daniel Oreo dominated all weekend and took the final, followed by Brad Oreo and Jamie Landrigan.

Street Stocks were hotly contested by a field of 13 and provided entertaining racing over both nights. The final was won by Reece Jones, with dual registered Jamie Landrigan behind him followed by Ashton McClintock in third.

In the juniors, Blake Webb maintained his dominant Port Hedland streak to win the finals ahead of Robert Dunbar, Tanika Webb and Sarah Stevens.

There were only two competitors in the sprint car final with John (Mongrel) Magerl from Karratha taking the win from Andrew (Speedracer) Pyke.

The club is excited to report there will be an increase in sprint car numbers this year due to some local drivers stepping out of their sedans to race sprinters, as well as working closely with Nickol Bay Speedway to ensure race calendars support travelling drivers.

The Pilbara Open feature race saw both street stocks and productions come together for the feature race.

Once again, Daniel Oreo drove faultlessly to become the 2015 Pilbara Open champion while Jones and McClintock filled out the minor places.

Saturday night's racing was marred by an accident involving Yvonne Lamprecht.

The next meet will be on Saturday, April 18, where there will be a full nights racing, ending with a Demolition Derby.
