Albany talent misses out

lbany-raised footballer Darcy Cameron has missed out on a place on an AFL list after yesterday morning’s pre-season and rookie draft.

Claremont talent manager Darcy Coffey admits he was shocked that no AFL club rookie-listed talented 203cm North Albany ruckman Darcy Cameron in last week’s pre-season and rookie draft.

Cameron was overlooked along with fellow local prospects Steven Edwards and Brenden Abbott, dashing their hopes of finding an AFL home for 2014.

Coffey said he was disappointed clubs did not recruit any of the three Great Southern footballers, especially Cameron who enjoyed a breakout season.

“I’m really surprised no one has taken a chance on Darcy,” Coffey said. “I am disappointed for him. On natural ability, I’m shocked he wasn’t given a chance.”

Five West Australians were selected in the rookie draft including Claremont’s Rohan Powell, taken by West Coast, who had also shown interest in both Cameron and Abbott.

Carlton decided to rookie-list discarded Collingwood ruckman Cameron Wood while the Bombers, who had also been looking at Cameron, decided to go with tall option Fraser Thurlow.

Coffey said he had no doubt all three could find their way into the AFL next year.

“It’s disappointing for the boys but if they crack back in and do the work anything can happen,” he said. “Chances don’t leave you at 18. If they are really committed to it I have got no doubt they will get another crack.

“Make no mistake, clubs will be watching closely to see how they respond.”

Coffey said the trio could all play league football with the Tigers in 2014 if they did the work at pre-season training.

Claremont board member and games record holder Darrell Panizza said the draft disappointment was just another challenge in the trio’s football journey.

“As much as it’s disappointing for the boys it’s exciting for Claremont; they will get their chance to play senior footy,” Panizza said.

“This will show if they have any real character. There is nothing better than a setback to make you hungrier to succeed.”

Cameron, who flew back into Perth on Tuesday night after completing two days training with Essendon at the club’s invite, said he was disappointed but remained upbeat.

The trio are expected to push for more senior opportunities at the Tigers under their new coach.
