Pen turning is a labour of love

Sean George

The pen, as the saying goes, is mightier than the sword, and one Kalgoorlie- Boulder man is making his own mark on writing craftsmanship.

Incorporating exotic materials such as alligator jawbone and local materials such as south-western carpet python snake-skin, pen-turner Sean George has started creating customised pens to sell.

An incidental purchase started Dr George on the path of pen crafting.

“I actually took two pictures, which I bought to frame at a shop, and I got a bill for $500 and I thought, oh my goodness, I have to do some of this myself,” he said.

Later discovering the technique of wood turning, where a square piece of timber is worked into a cylindrical or circular object such as a pen or bowl, a passion was ignited for pen craftsmanship.
