Bathroom design: Ensuite envy

Four designers share their insights on creating beautiful bathrooms. For Klopper & Davis Architects, the nearby ocean provided the inspiration for this ensuite’s palette.

“The ensuite has floor-to-ceiling double glazed, north-facing doors which open out on to a paved travertine balcony,” architect Sam Klopper, who worked with interior designer Olivia Reeves, said.

“This visual connection enhances the sense of space, as the balcony becomes an extension of the ensuite.” Mr Klopper said the aim was to create a luxurious, private retreat that evoked a sense of beachside elegance.

“The space has a neutral, natural colour palette which has a calming effect, encouraging relaxation,” he said.

“Being close to the ocean, the material palette makes reference to this.”

The luxurious materials see the combination of vein-cut Ocean Blue travertine tiles from Bernini with American white oak made by Artisan Cabinetry & Furnishings. An Alape Metaphor 500 bench-mounted basin pairs with a Phoenix Vivid spout and mixer, both from Reece, and a custom claw-foot tub from Cast Iron with a floor-mounted Olde English bath mixer from Sea of White. An Aeon wall-mounted light from Inlite creates ambience, while sheer curtains from Blind FX control the natural light.

Mr Klopper said the planning was simple and clever. “It utilises a T-shaped wall to create an open-plan space, which provides privacy to the shower and toilet,” he said. “The ‘T’ wall is clad in a vein-cut travertine, which sets a spectacular backdrop to the freestanding bath, and the dividing wall contains alcoves for storage and display which eliminates the need for glass shower screens.”

This bathroom is part of a project short-listed for the 2015 Australian Institute of Architects WA Architecture Awards.
