Love of horses pays off

A childhood interest in horses has helped Bryce Bevan win a prestigious scholarship that will launch him into the international thoroughbred industry.

The University of WA honours graduate is one of three Australians among 12 people from around the world to win a two-year Darley Flying Start Scholarship.

He will start his traineeship at a stud in Ireland next month, then will move on to placements at studs in Britain, the US, Dubai and Sydney.

Mr Bevan, who has bachelor's degrees in agricultural science and commerce, said his grandfather Keith Bevan sparked his interest in horses when he was a small boy by taking him to the trots in Albany.

By the time he was 18 he had his trainer's and reinsman's licence in the industry and he has raised horses in partnership with his grandfather for the past 10 years.

As a Darley trainee he will learn about all aspects of horse care and business management.

As well as submitting a written application and attending an interview, Mr Bevan had to send videos of himself working with horses.

He said he had always wanted a career in the racing industry but studied two broad degrees so he would have something else to fall back on.

"I'm very interested in breeding and stud management," he said.
