Basic Instinct star Sharon Stone has opened up about her struggle to recover from a stroke she suffered in 2001.

The actress was taken to hospital when she collapsed in her Los Angeles home, and she has now revealed it took her two years to recover, after she was left unable to talk or walk properly.

The 56 year old admits the health scare has made her more grateful for the future.

"I don’t feel bad. I’ll tell you what makes you feel bad – when you think you might not grow old…I was in an intensive care unit for nine days and the survival rate for what I went through is very low," she told Britain’s the Sunday Express.

"I had a massive brain hemorrhage. I bled for nine days. I spent two years learning to walk and talk again. I couldn’t even read for two years. It has been a humbling journey."
