Firefighters have been called in to deal with a chlorine gas leak which shut down a leisure centre in Belmont this morning.

Workers and members of the public were evacuated from the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre, on Progress Way, about 5.40am after staff noticed a strong smell of chlorine.

Firefighters entered the building in fully-enclosed gas suits to look for the source of the gas leak and monitor levels.

It is believed staff managed to stop the leak in the plant room before they left.

The leisure centre is expected to reopen today.
