Lanigan wins, dreams of gold

South West Academy of Sport athlete Bryce Lanigan was recently crowned the under-17 State road criterium champion.

When it comes to cycling, Bryce Lanigan is something of a jack of all trades, achieving success in not one, but three disciplines of the sport.

The 16-year-old has made the State teams for track, road and mountain biking - more than once - and has aspirations of one day wearing the green and gold colours of Australia.

His most recent achievements have only served to highlight his potential as one of the country's future cycling stars.

At the Pemberton Classic, which was held over the Labour Day long weekend, Lanigan finished first in the under-17 criterium and second in the under-17 road race.

The under-17 State Cross Country Mountain Bike Champion then travelled to Victoria where he was part of the WA team which competed in the Australian Mountain Bike Championships.

From the championships he was hand-picked to develop his skills as part of Mountain Bike Australia's under-17 junior development squad.

His selection to the group will see him participate in three camps throughout the year, one of which is set to be held in New Zealand.

"I'm looking forward to getting a range of skills and experience that I can hopefully also put back into my road cycling," he said.

"It will also help to get good experience to develop my skills so I can hopefully go on to Australian teams."

Lanigan is also the under-17 State road criterium champion, having won his event at the State championships held at Bentley Technology Park late last month.

He had a solo seven-minute break away from the chasing peloton.

While mountain biking and road cycling are Lanigan's favourites, the promising cyclist knows he will eventually have to choose one code to concentrate on as he aims to move to more elite levels of the sport.

"I'm developing my skills in the two before picking a path to go down," he said.

"I'd love to represent Australia at the Olympic Games and the world championships."
