Shutterbugs' talents in focus at photo challenge

Kununurra photographer Phil Normandale took out second place overall in the Kimberley Photographic Challenge with this night shot of the Diversion Dam.

Broome snapper Kelly Brooks has been judged the overall winner of the Kimberley Photographic Challenge for her moving shot of moody clouds over Streeter's Jetty in Broome.

Ms Brooks was also named the West Kimberley winner with Kununurra photographer Phil Normandale taking out first place for the East Kimberley and second overall.

Mr Normandale was praised for his striking night shot of lightning over Kununurra's Diversion Dam.

The challenge was judged by The West Australian's Travel editor Stephen Scourfield.

Challenge organiser Rocky Sutherland said he was pleased with how the event had run and the number of entries it had received.

"We're really happy with the numbers and the quality of the work," he said.

"Despite a short wet season, local snappers were still able to capture some stunning shots."

In total, 134 pictures were submitted from the East Kimberley and 116 from the West Kimberley.

Mr Sutherland said the pictures hopefully would be up on display at Broome and Kununurra airports in coming weeks after Australia's North West Tourism purchased the rights for use promoting the region.

The challenge was run in co-operation with ABC Open and Broome Camera Club.
