Cheynes Beach closed after shark death

Beaches will today remain closed at Cheynes Beach, about 60km east of Albany, today after the fatal shark attack which yesterday claimed the life of 17-year-old Jay Muscat.

The Department of Fisheries is trying to find the shark - most likely a white shark - and will again deploy equipment today in an effort to catch it.

The department has urged local people and holiday makers to stay out of the water.

Jay was spearfishing with a friend off Cheynes Beach near Bald Island when he was attacked by the shark.

A spokesman for Fisheries said the department was working with Police, Department of Parks and Wildlife and the City of
Albany.
