Rapist gets eight years jail

A mining supervisor who raped and bashed his partner in a prolonged campaign of physical, sexual and emotional abuse has been jailed for eight years.

The 44-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, subjected the mother of his two children to sustained beatings, which included breaking her wrist on one occasion - then attempting to break it again in another argument.

The FIFO worker also attempted to blackmail his partner into having sex with him via text messages, then raped the woman on her birthday.

He was this year found guilty of nine charges by a District Court jury, including five aggravated assaults. The last of the assaults, in April 2012, resulted in the man punching the woman up to 20 times in the stomach.

He will be eligible for parole in six years.
