AACTA nominations for 2015 revealed
Australian features that transport us to the past and future have dominated the AACTA Award film nominations, with Russell Crowe's first directorial effort The Water Diviner one of those getting recognition.
The Spierig brothers' time-travelling sci-fi flick Predestination, starring Ethan Hawke and the superb Sarah Snook, is currently leading the pool with nine nods.
Crowe's historical epic The Water Diviner is close behind with eight, while David Michod's follow-up to Animal Kingdom, the dystopian thriller The Rover, has seven nominations.
The nominations for the 4th Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards were announced in Sydney on Wednesday by Puberty Blues' onscreen husband-and-wife team Dan Wylie and Susie Porter.
The winners will be revealed at two major events in Sydney early next year - the awards luncheon on January 27 and the official ceremony on January 29.
In the coveted best film category are Predestination, The Water Diviner, The Babadook, Charlie's Country, The Railway Man and Tracks.
Oscar-winner Crowe is also nominated for the AACTA's best actor statuette, alongside David Gulpilil, Guy Pearce and Damon Herriman.
And the previously mentioned Snook is up for best actress, as are Essie Davis (The Babadook), Mia Wasikowska (Tracks) and Kate Box (The Little Death).
It's not just Aussies who are up for awards. International star Robert Pattinson, loved for his role in the Twilight series, has been nominated for AACTAs best supporting actor, while Avatar director James Cameron will be part of the team nominated for Best Feature Length Documentary for Deepsea Challenge 3D.
Meanwhile in the TV categories, the ABC dominated the nominations with 17 productions earning nods.
The Code led the count all up, with 10 nominations, Please Like Me (ABC 2) nabbed six nods and ABC productions The Broken Shore, Carlotta and Rake each earning five nods.
Receiving four nominations were the Seven Network's INXS - Never Tear Us Apart and Devil's Playground (Foxtel Showcase).
"This year has been a great year for the Academy, and a strong year for competition in our screen industry," AFI/AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella said in a statement on Wednesday.
The 4th AACTA Awards Ceremony will be broadcast on Network Ten, Thursday January 29, 2015
