Ex- AFL star Garlett on new charges

Failed AFL recruit turned meth addict Dayle Garlett is facing a mandatory jail term if convicted of fresh charges of driving recklessly to evade police.

The 20-year-old was arrested this morning after police reviewed video footage he posted on the internet that allegedly showed him speeding at 200km/h.

Police investigating the alleged incident also questioned him over an incident in Perth last Friday in which a driver allegedly refused to stop for officers and fled.

A police spokesman claimed further inquiries identified the vehicle believed to be in the video and established links between that allegedly stolen vehicle and an incident in which the driver of the vehicle failed to stop for police in the metropolitan area.

Mr Garlett has been charged over the alleged pursuit with fail to stop (to evade police) and reckless driving to evade police and charged over the alleged speeding on the video footage with reckless driving.

Under tougher legislation introduced in 2012, motorists face at least six months jail if they drive recklessly to escape police.

The latest allegations come on the back of an incident on Monday, where Mr Garlett was caught behind the wheel of an allegedly stolen 2012 silver Honda Accord near Geraldton.

When officers stopped the sedan on Brand Highway after other motorists claimed to have seen it being driven erratically, they found it was allegedly stolen from near Perth late last week and was connected to a fuel drive-off in Forrestfield.

A small amount of drugs, believed to be amphetamines, were allegedly found in the car.

As well as the video he posted that allegedly showed him driving at high speeds, Mr Garlett also posted several pictures to his Instagram account in recent days of him driving a silver car he dubbed the “New Rig”.

Less than a fortnight ago a magistrate warned Mr Garlett that he could be on a path to destruction after the 20-year-old admitted having a serious drug addiction, which was the real reason he quit the AFL and returned to Perth this year.

Mr Garlett has been granted police bail over today’s charges and is due in court early next month.
