Wave Rock snap to shine in NY

Moon Beams Over Wave Rock by Amberleigh Hendry

The tiny Wheatbelt town of Hyden is worlds apart from the bright lights of New York City.

But a little piece of Hyden will soon be on display in the Big Apple when a photo of Wave Rock taken by local Year 7 student Amberleigh Hendry is hung on the walls of the Australian consulate.

The image was chosen by deputy consul-general in New York Natalie Roche to commemorate the 50th anniversary of an image of Wave Rock that took out the grand prize at the 1964 New York Photographic Fair.

Amberleigh, 13, took the photo on an outing to Wave Rock last month when she and her classmates took part in a photography workshop run by Phillip Williams, who co-ordinates a program called Focus Force Kids with Cameras.

She said she took the photo as the sun was setting and she had wanted to include the moon in her shot.

"At first I thought the image had gone a bit wrong, but the moon looks really nice in it and there's a nice clear blue sky," Amberleigh said.

Her father Brem Hales said his daughter had been given a camera by her grandfather.

Hyden Primary School principal Felicity Sinclair said: "It's outstanding that a student from Hyden, in the middle of nowhere really, has been acknowledged for such a great photo."
