Bail renewed for cop on assault charge

An off-duty WA Police officer charged with assaulting two teenagers, including a police recruit, outside a Midland pub last month has had his bail renewed.

Shane Michael Ferguson, 34, made a brief appearance in the Midland Magistrate's Court this morning where he was not required to enter a plea.

The South East Metropolitan District officer was allegedly involved in an altercation outside the 7th Avenue Bar and Restaurant about 11pm on Friday, July 18.

As a result of the incident, Josh Prime, a 19-year-old police recruit who was off-duty at the time, received a fractured eye socket and was taken to Swan Districts Hospital for treatment.

It is alleged Mr Ferguson also struck Mr Prime's friend Hayley Lloyd-Riley, resulting in soreness to the 19-year-old's face and neck.

Mr Ferguson has been charged with grievous bodily harm and assault.

He is next expected to appear in court on October 29.

An internal police investigation into the incident is also being conducted.

Mr Ferguson is on annual leave and has not been stood down.
