Health work lauded

NAIDOC Week ended on a high note for Babbingur Mia Health Centre co-ordinator Moira Wilson, when she was recognised for her dedication to improving Aboriginal health in the community.

Mother-of-six Mrs Wilson, who has worked at the Council Avenue centre for the past four years, said she was honoured and humbled to be named the 2014 Dawn Tynan Health Award winner at the Rockingham Kwinana NAIDOC Ball on July 5.

Mrs Wilson said she wanted to ensure worthwhile Aboriginal health programs remained in place for future generations.

“I’m passionate about working to improve health within the Rockingham and Kwinana communities,” she said.

“This is where I have spent almost all of my working life.

“I’m used to just being behind the scenes, but I’m thankful to the community for acknowledging the work that I’ve done.”

Babbingur Mia service delivery manager Jodie Ferguson said Mrs Wilson was a wonderful dedicated professional and deserved winner of the award. She said Mrs Wilson was well known and respected in her field and community.

“For over 20 years Moira has been working in our community to improve the social, emotional and physical wellbeing of Aboriginal people,” she said.

“We are proud to have her as part of the team at Babbingur Mia, we know that under her guidance our Aboriginal health service will continue to grow.”

Mrs Wilson said she was grateful to her husband Steven and her daughters and grandchildren for supporting her in her work.
