British glam rockers Queen are heading back to Australia with new frontman Adam Lambert.

The former American Idol contestant will sing Freddie Mercury's classics for the Once in a Lifetime Tour.

It will be the first time Queen has come to Australia in almost 30 years.

The band sparked feverish speculation last week when they tweeted "For the first time in 30 years, Queen are heading back to...... (stay tuned)".

They've now confirmed the tour.

"Let's rock those beautiful arenas just one more time," Brian May said in a statement.

The trio first performed together in 2009 on American Idol, before teaming up again in 2011 at the MTV European Music Awards for an eight-minute medley of The Show Must Go On, We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions.

Lambert went on to front the band for a series of European shows as well as three sold-out gigs at London's Hammersmith Apollo.

The tour will kick off in Perth on August 22, before travelling to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

General public tickets go on sale on May 28.
