Kylie leads guest list glam

Pop princess *Kylie Minogue *headed the list of stars who turned out for the glitzy opening of *Baz Luhrmann *'s Strictly Ballroom: The Musical in Sydney.

The 45-year-old singer, right, was late for Saturday night's red carpet at the Lyric Theatre, slipping into the venue after the show had begun.

Minogue, who is filming The Voice Australia, wore a black cocktail dress and strappy black heels.

Luhrmann made a red-carpet entrance with his wife, Oscar- winning designer *Catherine Martin *, who brought her signature pizzazz to the costumes and set of the stage version of Luhrmann's hit 1992 film.

Martin said it was bittersweet to finally see the show in production.

"It's bittersweet - you're sad to let your baby out into the world," she said before the show.

"It's like taking your baby to preschool - you're sad and happy at the same time."

Luhrmann said the opening of the show was a significant moment for him.

"I think it's just the beginning; it's been with me and my life since I was a child ," he said.

The star-studded opening-night guest list also included *Joel Edgerton *, *Rachel Griffiths *, *Rachael Finch *, *Molly Meldrum *, The Voice winner *Harrison Craig *and star of the original film *Barry Otto *.

Edgerton praised Luhrmann for bringing the dance film to the stage, saying: "I just want to see what Baz has done with the stage version of this. I love Strictly Ballroom, it's just sort of excellent and it's one of the great Australian movies."
