Liquor store robber attacks with bottle
A 55-year-old liquor store attendant says he had no intention of approaching a thief who attacked him after stealing alcohol from a Warnbro shop.
Brian Kane said he noticed the man taking three bottles of Bombay Sapphire Gin before walking out of the store about 8.40pm on Tuesday night.
Mr Kane followed the man in the hope of catching a glimpse of a getaway vehicle or number plates to help police track down the offender.
Instead the man noticed the grandfather of two follow him and threw one of the bottles at his face before running from the scene.
“I didn’t see a bottle coming, I didn’t feel it,” Mr Kane said.
The liquor store attendant was knocked unconscious briefly before his store manager assisted him back in the store.
His face was covered in blood and he had shards of glass lodged in his skin.
The 55-year-old sustained a fractured skull, fractured eye socket, cracked jaw and a broken nose in the attack.
He is recovering in Royal Perth Hospital but is expected to be released later today.
He pleaded with the public to come forward if they knew the identity of the thief.
“(We need to) get this guy off the streets, he could have very easily killed me last night,” Mr Kane said.
Mr Kane, who has been a liquor store attendant for close to three years, said his attacker was gutless for throwing the bottle at him.
