Charity is close to dad’s heart

Youth cancer charity CanTeen is close to the heart of Rockingham businessman Kevin McKeown.

Mr McKeown’s daughter Deni is a cancer survivor and when she battled a brain tumour as a three-year-old, the family drew on the help of CanTeen.

He said CanTeen was the source of hope, happiness and inspiration when there was not much to smile about for his family.

With Deni, now 20, enjoying a happy and healthy life, Mr McKeown decided it was time to give back to the charity.

Next month, Mr McKeown will open the doors of his business, Balanced Health and Fitness, to the public to raise money for CanTeen.

“She was a bit young for CanTeen, but being in the cancer ward, often we saw the impact CanTeen had with the teenagers and the great work that they do,” he said.

“It’s a really tough gig for these kids and it kind of builds a community for them.

“You see how courageous these young people are — it’s really inspiring and stays with you forever.”

The open day is on Saturday, June 8 from 9am to 1pm with fitness classes, sausage sizzle, raffles and giveaways.
