Surfer flown to hospital after being bitten by shark in Byron Bay
A surfer has been airlifted to hospital after being bitten by shark in northern New South Wales.
Emergency crews were called to Manfred Street, Byron Bay, at about 6.40am on Sunday after reports a man was bitten on the leg by a shark while surfing near Belongil Beach.
Police said the 41-year-old man from nearby Suffolk Park alerted other surfers when he returned to shore.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital.
He is said to be in a serious but stable condition, with significant blood loss.
Main Beach and Belongil Beach have been closed for 24 hours.
