Desperate plea after huge brown snake found metres from kids' playground

A Queensland snake catcher has warned residents to be proactive if they see snakes in their local area after he relocated an eastern brown that was lurking just metres from a children’s play area.

Stuart McKenzie was called out to the park in Beerwah where the snake, which he estimates was about 1.6 metres in length, was spotted on a stone path often frequented by children.

The seasoned snake catcher uploaded a video of the capture to his Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7’s Facebook page warning of the dangers of snakes in public areas.

“He just doesn’t belong here,” Mr McKenzie can be heard saying in the clip as the snake tries to wriggle free when he picks it up.

He’s eventually able to bundle the snake into a bag before showing its hiding spot between two rocks.

“Apparently kids regularly come down here and throw stones and do what kids do,” he said.

Mr McKenzie was dismayed to discover this wasn’t the first time the snake had been seen so close to the play area after speaking with local residents.

He said anyone who sees snakes in public places, especially where children often are, they should contact professional snake handlers immediately.

“Please notify us if there is a venomous snake hanging around near your local park and we can assess each situation based on the information you give us,” he said.

Its the second time in a matter of weeks Mr McKenzie has stepped in to protect the safety of children in the area after a large goanna sneaked into a child’s bedroom.
