Shocking footage shows truck fall into a giant crater in road

An elderly man and his wife were left trapped inside their pickup truck after it fell into a huge crater created by a torrential downpour.

The vehicle plummeted into the hole in the town of Vicente Pires in Brazil’s Federal District.

In the video capturing the aftermath, the Nissan Frontier pickup truck can be seen stuck with only its front wheels out of the huge crater that has opened in the road.

Streams of water can be seen rushing down the road and onto the car as horrified onlookers and firefighters look on.

Local media report that heavy rain caused the road to collapse under the vehicle, trapping it in the crater.

The elderly couple inside, named as driver Oswaldo Jose, 76, and his wife Maria Marlucia, 53, were trapped in the car but were freed by firefighters.

They were treated for minor injuries suffered in the incident but were not taken to a hospital.

“There was a traffic jam and suddenly the car was pulled down. I needed to stay calm. We never though this could happen to us,” Mr Jose said.

“My wife said the pickup truck was sinking and she was below the ground. I didn’t know what to do. It was very scary.”

A crane was eventually brought in and managed to pull the vehicle out of the crater, according to reports.

“The small opening that already existed in the ground gave way. With the the weight of the car a hole was opened and the car fell down,” Regional Administrator Charles Guerreiro said.

He said a company had been carrying out works on the road and that company will pay for the damage done to the car.
