Shocking detail on driver's car leads to six charges on Anzac Day morning

Police were setting up road closures for Anzac Day when they were suddenly 'interrupted' by the unlikeliest of motorists.

A NSW driver has been arrested and charged with numerous offences after police spotted something seriously unusual about his car.

Officers were implementing road closures for Anzac Day processions in Fairfield, Sydney, early on Tuesday morning when they were suddenly “interrupted” by a man driving a Silver Toyota Kluger.

However when they looked closer, they realised the vehicle only had three wheels, with the fourth rim completely exposed.

“The vehicle was observed to proceed through a red light before officers began following the vehicle which turned into the carpark of Fairfield Leisure Centre,” the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said.

The car came to a complete stop before the 38-year-old driver fled on foot. He was arrested nearby and taken to Fairfield Hospital for drug and alcohol testing before being charged with six offences.

They include receiving and disposing of stolen property, driving in a dangerous manner, driving through a red light, unlawfully possessing number plates and driving a motor vehicle while disqualified.

Photos posted by the highway command show the silver SUV in the middle of the road and the bare rim with the tyre’s frayed edges still evident on the sides. The driver has been refused bail and will appear before the Fairfield Local Court at a later date.

Driver, 81, fined $2616, loses license

The incident comes just days after an 81-year-old woman was fined $2,616 and lost 12 demerit points for travelling 54km/h over the speed limit.

Police stopped the driver in the rural NSW town of Walgett at 4pm on Friday after clocking her speed at 104km/h, and “still accelerating”, in a 50km/h zone. “Police stopped the 81 year-old woman who wondered ‘What do I have to pull over for?’” officers said.

The woman was issued with a fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, and despite refusing to sign the paperwork, her license was immediately suspended for six months.

“The number plates on the vehicle were also confiscated for a period of 3 months, and a notice issued whereby the vehicle can no longer be used during the confiscation period,” police said.
