'Degenerate': Staff member posts savage resignation tweet using MP's account

An MP’s aide has staged a dramatic resignation - using his boss’s own Twitter account to lambast the politician.

Gareth Arnold, who identified himself as the communications team for Sheffield Hallam Independent MP Jared O’Mara branded his boss “the most disgustingly morally bankrupt person I have ever had the displeasure of working with” in a series of tweets on Tuesday night.

In the string of tweets targeting the MP based in the northern English city, Mr Arnold wrote: “Comms Team signing off... forever.”

“Jared, you are the most disgustingly morally bankrupt person I have ever had the displeasure of working with. You do not care about your constituents. You do not care about anyone but yourself.”

He went on to say he “cannot and will not defend” Mr O’Mara or his “vile, inexcusable contempt for the people who voted you in”, adding: “You selfish, degenerate prick.”

“My fear is that now (as I quit) the rest of the staff will leave and once again you will close your office and stop helping anyone but still take your wages until you have the decency to call a byelection,” Mr Arnold continued.

The tweets on Mr O’Mara’s alleged conduct continued until Arnold finished with the words: “Consider this my resignation. Thanks, Gareth Arnold.” with a GIF of Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner’s infamous microphone drop at the 2014 Brit awards.

Former employee continues rampage

On his own Twitter account, where his biography says he “used to work for an MP (for my sins)”, Mr Arnold referred to his explosive resignation.

“I am pretty sure Jared is asleep because he hasn't been in for a few weeks and hadn't replied to my WhatsApp... oh crumbs,” he wrote.

“He has just messaged me and he pays that little attention to anything that he's not even seen the tweet all of his constituents have. Unbelievable.”

Mr O’Mara is no stranger to controversy.

The 37-year-old’s victory against former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was one of the shocks of the 2017 general election.

Mr O’Mara resigned from Labour in 2018 after being suspended over historic misogynistic and homophobic comments made online and has been an independent MP ever since.

In April, the Yorkshire Post reported that he had shut down his office for a month after all of his staff either quit or were fired, leaving him unable to hold constituency surgeries or respond to phone calls or correspondence.

Mr Arnold was eventually removed from the Twitter account late on Tuesday (local time) before he took a swipe at Piers Morgan following the intense media interest in his tweets.

“So I'm doing quite a lot of TV, radio and newspaper interviews for the next few days. Apologies for not responding to emails/texts in good time. Also, before you ask @piersmorgan you gammon-headed turnip - I've just spent the last 8 weeks with one idiot, don’t need another,” he wrote.

Opinion was divided on Twitter following his outburst, with many praising his actions for outing the politicians behaviour however others slamming him for a self-centred stunt.

“How early into your 8 weeks of employment did you plan this notoriety launchpad?” one person queried.
