Shark eyes Wildcats duo
The NBL free agency period is less than a week old – so what could be more symbolic than a shark circling Perth Wildcats stars Damian Martin and Jesse Wagstaff?
Club captain Martin and versatile forward Wagstaff are two of the most important members of the Wildcats’ star-studded roster.
The championship-winning teammates are both out of contract and have attracted attention from rival clubs.
But while they leave the negotiations to their agents, Martin and Wagstaff have been enjoying a well-earned break after playing key roles in securing the Wildcats’ sixth NBL title last month.
They got the shock of their lives during a fishing trip off Rottnest yesterday when they had chance encounter with a shark, which circled their boat for about 15 minutes.
“It was a pretty quiet day on the fishing front, then all of a sudden someone spotted a great white and we were all excited for the next 15 minutes,” Martin said.
“We’d just caught a fish and it was still hooked. The poor little fish was swimming around and this great white came in to get it twice.
“The first time we were able to track it circling a few times and then come in from the side.
“The second time we thought it had disappeared but it must have just swum under and come underneath it. It gave us all a bit of a surprise.”
None more so than Wagstaff, it would appear.
“He might be cool, calm and collected on the free-throw line for a game-winner, but put a shark in the water and the guy starts trembling,” Martin said.
Martin was back on the practice court this morning for a shooting session and is set to play a role for the Australian Boomers against China in a four-game series starting later this month.
