Sister struggles to comprehend baby brother's death to meningococcal

A little girl who lost her baby brother to meningococcal B doesn’t understand why she’ll never see him again.

Mount Gambier parents Nathan Braddock, 35, and Emma Smith, 32, lost their six-month-old boy, Jordan, to the illness on March 18.

Jordan was rushed to a GP before being taken to an emergency department. It took 30 minutes for a rash to take over his body, and two hours later he was dead.

His devastated mother has told the Adelaide Advertiser Jordan’s sister Alexis, two, doesn’t understand he’s gone.

“Alexis told me this morning she wants to cuddle him (Jordan) and it’s really hard hearing it from her because she doesn’t understand,” Ms Smith said.

“It’s hard when she mentions his name, but we want her to grow up remembering him.”

Mr Braddock wrote on Facebook, “(I’ve) never been so shattered, heartbroken, empty, sick, gutted and lost in my life”.

“The word cruel is not even close,” he wrote.

The family has since started a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Meningococcal Australia and has pushed for the vaccine to become part of the National Immunisation Schedule.
