Police dog Ink released from animal hospital

Ink the police dog, who was injured in the line of duty 10 days ago, has taken the next step in his recovery and been released from the Adelaide Animal Hospital.

The German Shepherd suffered six broken ribs when it is believed he was run over while chasing suspects in a botched ATM robbery at O’Halloran Hill on June 10.

His handler Senior Constable Tony Potter said Ink underwent surgery last Friday and has since come along in leaps and bounds.

“Ink’s recovery’s been really good given the nature of the injury – the broken ribs and subsequent punctured lung – he struggled a bit for the first few days,” Senior Constable Potter said.

While the recommended recovery time from broken ribs in six weeks, police will be taking his recovery carefully and plan to have him back to full duty for September 1.

It has been a tough journey for Ink and his handler.

“They are your best mate, they live with us, they are not centrally kenneled, so they are part of the family as well when they’re not at work, so to see him injured in the manner he was was quite upsetting,” Senior Constable Potter said.
