Robin Bailey 'sacked' from radio job hours after co-hosts sing her 'Happy Birthday' on air

Brisbane radio host Robin Bailey has been sacked hours after her co-hosts sung "Happy Birthday" to her live on air.

The popular 97.3 FM radio host claims she was “blindsided” by Australian Radio Network’s decision to cut her off after 10 years in the role.

ARN management informed Ms Bailey following her shift on Monday and told her she would not be back on air, according to The Courier Mail.

The call came one year after she broke down on air as she opened up about her husband's suicide.

Bailey told the publication she was “distressed” by the decision not to renew her contract.

Her co-hosts Terry Hansen and Bob Gallagher addressed the shock decision on air on Tuesday.

“We’ve had some shock news with the departure of our friend Robin,” Hansen said.

“But she’s a fighter and she will bounce back. We will miss you Rob.”

Gallagher added: “We wish Rob the best and the show must carry on.”

Bailey, a mother-of-three, celebrated her 46th birthday on Sunday.

At work on Monday it was business as usual as her co-hosts helped her celebrate her birthday.

The crew posted a birthday message for Bailey on Twitter along with a cheerful video of her enjoying chocolate cake.

After leaving the role she told The Courier Mail she was at a loss following the decision.

“The fact that they say (ARN) they tried really hard is a joke,” she said.

ARN National Content Director Duncan Campbell has said the network tried hard to keep Bailey with 97.3.

He told Daily Mail “negotiation was ongoing for a long period of time with Robin's management”.

“We are very disappointed we weren't able to agree to terms, but unfortunately, based on the information ARN was consistently given throughout the negotiation process, we were led into a position where we were unable to proceed with contract renewal.”

Bailey thanked her loyal listeners for their on-going support in the role.

She had spent 10 years on air with the station and said the job was also a “home, family and friends” during “good times and bad”.

Bailey's husband Tony Smart committed suicide in September 2014 after a long battle with depression.

“After such a long and positive relationship at 97.3 I would have anticipated a more respectful approach to my departure.”

Hansen and Gallagher are expected to remain, joined by a new host in the future.
