Rising star killed after crashing into horse

The teammates and family of a rising young volleyball player are in mourning after she died in a car crash involving a horse on a Brazilian motorway.

Volleyballer Nubia Rebello from Sao Paulo died in a road accident in the early hours of November 14 (local time).

Rebello was a passenger in the car that drove into a horse on the Anhanguera Highway, according to authorities.

The athlete was taken to the Clinical Hospital of the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirao Preto but would ultimately succumb to her injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, whose identity was not given, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Due to the impact, the horse involved in the accident also died. It is unclear how the horse ended up on the motorway.

The young victim had a degree in dentistry and lived in the town of Cravinhos.

Her volleyball club Volei Fem Cravinhos posted

"You tried so hard to understand what volleyball fully represented in your life, you sought to understand all the meanings that the sport symbolised, every rule, each objective, and every smile."

The Municipal Sports Department of Cravinhos also lamented the volleyball player’s death.

"Our condolences go out to all of Nubia’s family and friends, as well as to all the athletes and the Technical Committee who worked with her all these years," it said in a statement.

The victim was buried in front of friends and family this week.
