Resident stumped by unusual find next to wall in home: 'Keeps coming out'

Online people joked the unknown substance looked like bagel seasoning, but encouraged the man to get a pest inspection.

A resident has been puzzled by the "white and black things" which keep appearing on his floor and around the inside of his window despite cleaning up a similar mess days earlier.

The unknown substance was compared to bagel seasoning online with the tiny specs only recently becoming an issue for the occupier, despite living in the property in Victoria for over a year and a half.

"Underneath one of the architraves these black and white things keep coming out of the gap," the man said. "We have cleaned it up many times and after some days or weeks there's more of it. If I spread the architrave more comes out then."

An image of the man's apparent pest problem resembles bagel seasoning scattered across the floor in the Victorian home. Right, he pulls the window architrave slightly ajar showing the specs fall out.

People online were as equally stumped by the discovery and urged the resident to reach out to a local pest control for advice.

'Seems to be something ant related', pest expert says

Sydney pest control expert Christopher Moschella believes the discovery is "something ant related" and has treated similar problems in the past.

"It could just be a bunch of ants living in the wall or something and creating more room for themselves," he told Yahoo News.

He explained ants often "throw building materials and dust" out of their way while they make room for their colony, with the debris of this refurbishment-type behaviour most likely what the resident found on his floor.

However unsettling it may be to think of an ant colony taking up residence in the walls of your home, treatment can be quick and doesn't always require "ripping out the wall", Moschella said.

"Treat it with chemical or insecticide powder, something that flushes out an insect," he explained. "If they have any concerns of structural damage, they should be getting a timber and timber pest inspection."
