And it has finally happened, with ginger emoji now available on iPhone as part of the iOS 12.1 update.

The update adds 70 new emoji, and is available for iPhone now.

For several years, redheads have been vexed that there is no emoji for their hair type – but several different shades of hair for vampires, for instance.

In Scotland – where 13% of the population is ginger – there have been online petitions for a ginger emoji.

A list of new emoji was approved at the Unicode Technical Committee meeting with Apple, according to Jeremy Burge, editor-in-chief of Emojipedia.

Burge said, ‘The most common feedback to Emojipedia since Apple released iOS 11.1 has been, “But what about the redheads?”’
