Recall of mini jelly cups with banned ingredient over choking fears

Jelly cups sold at Asian grocery stores across Victoria have been recalled over an ingredient banned in Australia that could potentially become a choking hazard.

The Clever Mama Mini Jelly Cups contain the Japanese plant konjac, often used as a vegan gelatin substitute in Japan and China.

The Clever Mama Mini Jelly Cups (Kiwi Flavour) & Clever Mama Mini Jelly Cups With Lactic Acid are deemed a “potential choking hazard if swallowed whole”.

The ACCC warns the sweets “may lodge in the throat and restrict air supply.”

It is believed konjac does not dissolve easily when eaten and therefore poses a risk to consumers.

Consumers should not eat the jelly products and instead return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The safety alert comes one week after another jelly cup brand containing konjac was recalled amid choking fears.
