Real of fake? 'Ghost' appears in front of frightened teens in decrepit hospital

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, a group of teens in Costa Rica has seemingly had a frightening encounter after filming a 'spirit'.

Footage which has been viewed thousands of times was at first thought to show thrill-seekers who had reportedly broken into the Sanatorio Duran hospital - a place where reports of paranormal activity have surfaced before.

In the video the group can be seen wandering around the decrepit rooms and corridors.

At one point one of them seems to get a fright and someone can be heard running quickly before the camera moves to a staircase where they shine a flashlight.

They continue exploring the building but a short time later a torch light is directed towards an area in a room where something similar to a figure seems to appear.

The original clip of the teens' apparently scary expedition is six and a half minutes long.

But a button now at the top of the YouTube footage links to another clip, which appears to show that the 'ghost' was created.

Translated from Spanish the clip is titled "What a pro! The Phantom of the Sanatorium Duran"

Despite the apparition now seeming false, the 100-year-old hospital itself is still a spooky setting, as it is thought to have housed thousands of tuberculosis patients and also acted as an asylum for the mentally ill.

It has also been referred to as the "Most Haunted Place in Costa Rica" on a number of websites.

Many were quick to call the scenario fake from the beginning.

A rough translation of a comment from one sceptic wrote: "It looks fake ! This is what always happens with these videos."

But there were many believers out there too, possibly due to the fact that the dilapidated establishment is considered 'haunted' by some.

One user who claims they have been to there wrote: "It is really sacry (Sic) , and i believe that is is 100% real. Almost all the people that takes pictures there they capture strange things on the backgrounds. I don't even know how they go there at night, i wouldn't have done it. Also try to look at the 6:32 of the video, do you think that was fake too? "

Another wrote: "Why did you run? Stand your ground attempt to communicate...chances are this will never happen again. "

The original video which was posted to YouTube last week has been viewed more than 200,000 times.
