Queensland man swept away in floodwaters confirmed dead after car found

The body of a 67-year-old man who went missing after his vehicle was swept away at Marys Creek near Gympie has been found.

Queensland police said the man and his wife were travelling in separate cars around 6.50pm on Monday when the man crossed a flooded causeway in his vehicle.

After initially evacuating his car, the man attempted to remove his vehicle from the causeway before it was swept away.

"It is believed the man travelled halfway across before he became stranded," Queensland Police said in a statement.

Search crews spent six hours looking for the man before dangerous conditions saw their efforts suspended until first light on Tuesday.

Police and swift water rescue personnel located a car submerged further down the creek just after 6am before confirming the man's body was found inside.

His wife is said to be distressed but not physically hurt.

As parts of Queensland deal with flooding from torrential rain during the past few days, drivers have been warned not to try to cross submerged roads and causeways.

"If it is flooded, please forget it. Don't take any risks," Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Andrew Kelly said.

He said more rain was expected throughout Tuesday and into Wednesday.

"We just ask members of the public please be careful, please heed warnings," Mr Kelly said.
