June long weekend opening hours: When you can shop, see a movie and buy a drink

Get excited everybody, the Queen’s birthday long weekend is nearly upon us.

Sure, it might not make any sense to be celebrating our 93-year-old monarch on a completely random day, but who cares as long as we don’t have to go to work on Monday right?

Here’s what is going this long weekend on and the opening hours you need to know.

Which states have a long weekend?

The Queen’s birthday public holiday will be enjoyed by every state on Monday, June 10 except for Queensland and Western Australia.

But don’t worry, they mark the occasion in October 7 and September 30, respectively.

What is open in Sydney this long weekend?

Supermarkets in Sydney

Coles: No trading restrictions. Find more information on opening times here.

Woolworths: All major stores will be open but smaller metro stores in the city on Margaret Street and George Street will be closed. More information on hours of operation can be found on the shopping giant’s website.

ALDI: No trading restrictions. More information about public holiday trading hours can be found on the website.

Sydney bottle shops

Sydney attractions this long weekend

Most cinemas including Events, Hoyts and Dendy cinemas will be open on Monday. Movie session times will be available on their websites.

The Vivid Festival on Sydney’s harbour will run all weekend long as it enters its final week.

The Sydney Film Festival will be screening across the city until Sunday the 16th of June.

The Archibald Prize is currently on display at the Art Gallery of NSW, through to September. All galleries will be open on the Queen’s birthday holiday but may have shortened hours.

Roads and Transport in and around Sydney

Trains and buses will be running on a reduced schedule. You can check timetables for your journey here.

Meanwhile traffic work on the M4 at The Northern Road at South Penrith will be closed in both directions throughout the weekend from 9pm Friday until 4am Tuesday.

Supermarkets in Melbourne

Woolworths: All stores open except metro shopfronts on Bourke Street and Collins Square.

ALDI: No trading restrictions.

IGA: A majority of the independent grocers will be open.

Dan Murphy’s: Will be open between 10am and 6pm.

Westfield: Westfield stores across Victoria will be open from 10am to 5pm but certain shopfronts in the centre may differ.

Melbourne attractions this long weekend

The Winter Wine Weekend kicks off this weekend on the Mornington Peninsula if you fancy yourself as a budding sommelier.

The Big Freeze at the G will take place this weekend as footy fans raise money for charity.

Outside of Melbourne, the Woodend Winter Arts Festival which brings international talent from the music, literary and arts community will run from June 7 to 10.

Roads and Transport in and around Melbourne

Melbourne public transport will operate on Saturday timetables on Monday.

Buses will also be replacing trains on certain trips on the Glen Waverley Line, Pakenham Line, Belgrave/Lilydale Line and Sandringham Line due to roadworks.

Extra trains and trams will be put on to cater to footy fans attending three AFL games played in Melbourne this weekend.

The Adelaide Cabaret Festival kicks off this weekend with some huge guest including Australia Euro Vision finalist Kate Miller-Heidke.

The Sri Chinmoy Queen's Birthday Half Marathon will take place at Lennox Gardens in the city on Monday as runners of all abilities get active to celebrate our queen.

Outside of Canberra, the Braidwood book fair takes place this long weekend.

When do double demerits apply this Queen's Birthday long weekend?

Anyone driving in NSW and the ACT is being reminded double demerits start from 12am on Friday until 12am on Tuesday.

Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and Northern Territory don’t have double demerits.

Queensland and Western Australia don’t celebrate the Queen’s birthday this Monday so they will also not have double demerit points this weekend.

When is the Queen’s real birthday?

As well as being one of the wealthiest grandmas in the world, the Queen also has the privilege of having two birthdays.

She was actually born on the 21st of April, 1926.

But in the UK and some Commonwealth countries she gets a second birthday celebration on the second Saturday of June, a tradition that dates back to King George II in 1748.
