When do double demerits apply this Queen's Birthday long weekend?

It might be a long weekend with the Queen’s Birthday being celebrated around the country but drivers are being reminded police will be out in force as double-demerit points apply.

This means not wearing your seatbelt could net you six demerit points along with a $337 fine.

But what else does it mean for you?

NSW and ACT drivers beware

Anyone driving in NSW and the ACT is being reminded double demerits start from 12am on Friday until 12am on Tuesday.

The offences ACT and NSW police are targeting include speeding, illegal use of mobile phones, not wearing a seatbelt and riding without a helmet.

Riding without a helmet will see you hit with six demerit points and a $337 fine over the long weekend.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy told reporters police “will be out there in force this weekend”.

“It’s pretty sobering when you think about the current statistics in relation to people getting killed on our roads,” he said.

“One hundred and sixty five people have lost their lives on NSW roads so far this year.”

No double demerits in Queensland and WA

Queenslanders do not celebrate the Queen’s Birthday until later this year on October 7.

The same applies to Western Australia, with the state celebrating the Queen’s Birthday a week earlier than Queensland on September 30.

Victoria, Tasmania, NT and SA also exempt

Victoria will be celebrating the Queen’s Birthday on Monday.

But a Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed to Yahoo News Australia drivers would not be hit with double-demerit points.

This is also the case for drivers in Tasmania, Northern Territory and South Australia.
