Prized caravan stolen from terminal cancer sufferer weeks before dream holiday

A Queensland couple who spent three years planning a caravan trip around Australia have been robbed of their dream holiday just weeks before they were due to set off.

Danny Hancock, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2012, had spent Saturday afternoon volunteering for the Commonwealth Games.

When he returned to his home in Burleigh Heads that night, he walked past his custom-fitted Jayco caravan and called it a night.

But when the 64-year-old awoke on Easter Sunday, all he found were the remnants of the prized caravan’s locks.

“You can imagine how you feel when you’ve got the trip of a lifetime planned, and then it gets taken away from you… it’s disgraceful,” Mr Hancock told Yahoo7 News.

“It looks like a professional hit, they’ve used bolt cutters to get in… no one heard a thing.”

He and his wife of 42 years, Sue, had spent the past three years doing small trips down to Tasmania and South Australia practicing for “the big trip around the paddock”.

"Absolutely gutted that people with no honour can do this," Ms Hancock wrote, alongside a series of photos of their caravan.

The Queensland grandfather, who is currently battling metastasised prostate cancer, said “the standard-grey nomads” trip was something he had dreamt of doing for 42 years.

“I was told I might last one year, I might last three years,” he said.

The Hancock's were due to start their well-planned journey after the end of the Commonwealth Games later this month, meeting other friends down in South Australia.

With time against them, they know that date may now be pushed way back.
