‘Shame on you’: Mum shocked by note left on car after parking in disabled spot

A young Sunshine Coast mother has issued a heartfelt message to the person who left a note on her car, shaming her and her disabled daughter for parking in a disability spot.

Shannell Beriman and her daughter were making a trip to Kmart on Thursday afternoon and decided not to use her wheelchair.

Ms Beriman revealed that in addition to suffering from Joint Hypermobiity syndrome, her daughter also suffers from a rare and incurable genetic disorder known as ‘Glycogen Storage Disease’.

Capable of walking short distances, the pair left the walker and wheelchair behind and walked into the Caloundra mall – unaware they were being watched by another shopper.

When they returned, Ms Beriman found a note on her car that read “Why are you parking in a disabled carpark when both you and your daughter are perfectly capable of walking?”

“Wrong – shame on you for using the sticker ungraciously.”

Revealing that her daughter is lucky just to be alive, the shocked mum took to Facebook to share the letter and educate people to not “judge a book by its cover”.

“She uses the wheelchair almost everyday but absolutely always uses it for long distances. She also uses a walker at home when needed and other home supporting aides daily to help with her day to day living,” she wrote.

“There's been 4 days in the past 2 weeks that she was unable to even get out of bed, crying in pain; but of course you didn't know this.

“She is connected to a pump all night, every night that keeps her alive and has done all of her life; Of course you wouldn't have know this either.

“I just hope from reading this, that you and others like you are not so quick to judge people in the future. You never know a person's story by looking at them.”
