EXCLUSIVE: Greyhound left to die in sweltering Brisbane heat

A greyhound dog perished in Brisbane’s sweltering heat after being left for days tied to a pole without water, food or shelter.

The greyhound, a breed which rarely barks, was exposed this week to temperatures of least 30 degrees.

The young female dog named Mia was discovered earlier today by a staff member at the back of businesses in Capabala, in the city’s south east.

The joint Queensland Police and RSPCA Greyhound Racing Inquiry Taskforce are investigating the circumstances of the dog’s death.

It is unclear how long the dog had been tied to the pole, however, police said it may have been left there sometime after a greyhound race meet at a nearby track last weekend.

The Queensland Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association (QGBOTA) said the dog, “Mia” was trialing at the Capalaba track last Sunday when she ran off towards the main road.

QGBOTA president Brenton Wilson said the owners and others searched streets surrounding the area for several hours but could find Mia.

He said during this time, the Redland Council, RSPCA and Racing Queensland were notified of the incident.

“The owners also posted on the Greyhound-Data website & Facebook to highlight their concern to Industry participants and the general public in Capalaba,’’ Mr Wilson said, “The outcome is horrendous...for Mia and for her distraught loving owners, and for those of us who empathise with them."

Police and the RSPCA are investigating how the dog came to be tied to a pole and said it was possible someone may have found it and thought it belonged to local businesses.

7 News was told the dog may have been obscured from view by wooden pallets.

The dog will be examined tomorrow to 2nd a cause of death.
