Hundreds gather to farewell murdered mother Tara Brown

Hundreds of mourners gathered on Queensland's Gold Coast this morning to farewell Tara Brown, the young mother murdered in what is alleged to be an appalling case of domestic violence.

Among those who came to say goodbye to the 24-year-old was her irrepressible three-year-old daughter, Aria, who has perhaps become the new face of the unspeakable tragedy.

Dozens of people, some wearing homemade white ribbons and custom-printed T-shirts, gathered outside the Southport Church of Christ, where the service was held this morning.

The young mother's death has shocked the Gold Coast and created an outcry for more to be done to tackle domestic violence.

Police allege Ms Brown was attacked by former partner Lionel Patea after being run off the road.

Patea is then alleged to have beaten Ms Brown in the face with a cast iron fire hydrant cover as she lay trapped in her overturned car.

Ms Brown was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital but died the following day.

A family member took to Facebook to thank those that have reached out over the past week.

"Our family thanks everyone for the overwhelming support we have received and appreciate it so much," the post on a tribute page read.

Patea faced Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday where he was formally charged with Ms Brown's murder.

He's set to reappear in court on November 11.
