A crime scene has been established after an alleged assault on the Gold Coast.

Authorities were called to a house at Randwick Court just after 2pm (AEST) on Monday after reports of a domestic dispute.

Detective Inspector Marc Hogan said neighbours had overheard a man and a woman arguing.

"At the present time, police are just trying to put together what's occurred," he said.

"She is in a bad way though."

The woman was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

A man believed to be in his 30s was located in a vehicle around the corner.

He was arrested by police and is reportedly assisting officers with their inquiries.

Residents reportedly overhead a domestic disturbance prior to the assault.

Neighbour Chris Cunha said the close knit community was in shock.

“I feel devastated because I don't know what happened,” she said.

“I’m really worried now."
