The deadly diagnosis for Melbourne woman growing 'beard'
Doctors have made a startling discovery after a Melbourne woman presented herself with hair growing all over her face.
The 51-year-old, who had hair growing on her face, neck and upper body, had a 37-year history of smoking but no other medical history, according to her case published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
She also had fatigue, weight loss and a cough.
Doctors noted the hair could have indicated an eating disorder, an endocrine disorder or cancer.
A PET-CT scan found an adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer, in her right lung.

She was treated with chemotherapy and medication.
“Two months after the start of treatment, the hair growth had slowed substantially, and the cough and weight loss had completely resolved,” researchers wrote.
