Popular milk brand sold at Coles and Woolworths recalled

The recall of a popular milk product over microbial contamination concerns has been expanded and another product owned by the same company has been recalled.

Following an initial recall of the Milk Lab almond milk one litre cartons sold in South Australia with a August 6, 2021, best before date, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand on Tuesday announced other products were affected.

Parent company Freedom Foods is now recalling its Milk Lab almond milk which has been for sale nationally in coffee shops and food service outlets.

Cartons with the best before dates of June 18, 2021, July 1, 2021, July 20, 2021, July 29, 2021 and August 6, 2021, in all states and territories have been labelled as unsafe to consume.

The Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Chocolate Almond Milk sold in a host of Coles and Woolworths stores across NSW, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia has also been recalled.

Consumers who bought the product with the best before date of April 27, 2021, have been urged to “return them to the place of purchase for a full refund”.

The government body said anyone concerned about their health after consuming either of the products should seek medical advice.

Food Standards warned that products with microbial contamination could potentially cause illness if it’s consumed.

A spokesperson responding to a person concerned about when would be appropriate to seek health advice explained there were traces of bacteria called pseudomonas aeruginosa detected in the milks.

“While it is usually harmless for healthy people, it can cause human illness, especially where people have another illness or have weak immune systems,” they wrote in a comment.

“Pseudomonas aeruginosa is also often a cause of spoilage of foods such as eggs, milk, cheese, meat and fish—causing them to smell and taste ‘off’.

“When such foods are eaten, it can cause minor symptoms—such as headache and mild diarrhoea. If you’re not feeling well best to check in with your doctor, hope this helps.”
