A man wanted over the stabbing death of his former partner in NSW’s Lake Macquarie region has been shot dead by police on Thursday after allegedly threatening officers with a knife.
Investigators were trying to track down Tafari Walton after a woman was found with critical stab wounds at a home in Glendale, west of Newcastle, on Wednesday.
The woman, who has been identified as mother Gabriella Thompson, was rushed to John Hunter Hospital but later died.
Officers confronted Walton at a home on Vena Street in Glendale just before 9am on Thursday when he allegedly threatened them with a knife.
He was shot by police and died at the scene.
“A critical incident team will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm,” NSW Police said in a statement.
Tributes have begun to flow for Ms Thompson whose emotional friends spoke near the crime scene.
“I just feel so emotional about it. It’s just sad that a woman who was also a woman can go out like this to domestic violence. It just needs to stop,” friend Naomi Tyrrell said.
