Police officer faces life-threatening attack - but not from a criminal
Police officers are placed in potentially deadly situations every day, but for one Queensland cop, the threat came from an unexpected corner.
Sergeant Dave Raymond was chasing a criminal in Cairns on Thursday night when he was attacked – but it wasn’t by the crook.
The Queensland police officer and his dog Axel were pursuing a suspected gunman through a creek bed when he was bitten by a red-bellied black snake.
While the red-bellied black snake is venomous, fortunately Sergeant Raymond was protected by the fabric of his trousers.

“Between snakes, spiders, crocodiles, there’s always something out there to get you,” Sergeant Raymond said.
The snake’s fangs pierced his pants and left a bruise, but no venom.
