Police say suspected illegal casino appeared 'professional'

Police have shut down a suspected illegal casino operating out of an apartment in Brisbane.

Officers from the State Command’s Major and Organised Crime Squad stormed the West End apartment block on Friday about 9pm.

They detained 21 people and seized cash, gaming equipment, poker chips and phones.

A 38-year-old man was issued with a Notice to Appear in court after allegedly being in possession of cocaine.

Detective Sergeant John Rhule told reporters on Saturday the set up was “quite professional” with tables you could find at a casino.

“The game consisted of a professional setup with professional poker tables, professional chips,” he said.

“It was quite well resourced and established.”

He wouldn’t go into specifics on how much money was being gambled but said it could be considered “large amounts”. He also described the 21 people detained as “typical members” of the Brisbane community.

“It’s the first time in many years that State Crime Command has investigated such a matter as an unlawful game,” Det Sgt Rhule said.

“It doesn’t occur often.”

Investigations into the suspected illegal casino are ongoing.
